A statement by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, James Saunders Watson Esq

I am deeply saddened by the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who dedicated his life to the service of our country and the Commonwealth.

After a distinguished career as one of the youngest First Lieutenants in the navy in World War 2, he devoted himself and his considerable talents to supporting Her Majesty as the longest serving consort in our history.

He was the champion of a great many varied and diverse causes, in particular among the youth, where he will always be associated with the Duke of Edinburgh award.

In Northamptonshire, we benefitted on many occasions from his visits, most recently when he visited with her Majesty during the Diamond Jubilee tour and the opening of the Corby Cube in 2012.

His life of selfless service to our country deserves the gratitude of every one of us.

I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to Her Majesty The Queen and all members of the Royal family at this very sad time.
